Communication Chart
When people are dealing with cancer or a chronic health condition, they react differently - some people draw into themselves while others want to talk to people around them. A lot of how we talk and communicate with each other happens below the surface of our words, and sometimes the words we use do not really tell the entire story.
The communication chart can help take some of the guess work out of your behavior and get your needs met more easily.
Do you ever wish people could read your mind? Or wish people knew when to back off and when to give you a hug? Or ask you if you want to talk? See Example.
TAKE ACTION
Think of what makes you sad, angry, frustrated, and happy. What are the things you want people to do when you are feeling this way? How would they know you were angry by looking at you or hearing you talk?
TIPS
The last column "I need you to" is a place where you can share with people what you want them to do, instead of what they may be doing now. You are giving people tips on how to best support you!
We offer ways for you to think about your experience and take action. See the LINKS page for websites that offer resources, information and support.
